How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter Properly

Splash Courses · Filter CLEANING

Your hot tub filter does a lot of quiet work. Every time the jets run, water is pushed through it to pull out oils, debris, skin cells, and other contaminants before it cycles back in. When the filter clogs, everything downstream suffers — cloudy water, overworked pumps, and chemistry that's harder to balance. The good news: keeping it clean is simple.

How to clean a hot tub filter, step by step

Flat

Simplicity flat filters

Flat filters are designed to be disposable and swapped every 1–3 months depending on use, but it never hurts to rinse them out.

  1. Hit the Standby Mode button on your controller to pause the pumps.

  2. Remove the JetPak in front of the Simplicity filter housing (the first JetPak to the right of the main control).

  3. Reach into the jet pod, grasp the filter holder handle, push it toward the inside of the spa, and lift up to remove. Remove the holder completely before the filter so debris doesn't fall into your spa.

  4. Compress the pleats and push the filter forward to remove it from the holder. Lift the edge past the capture tab.

  5. Spray along the pleats from one side to the other using a garden hose with a nozzle. Rinse thoroughly.

  6. Reinstall with the glue lines facing up. Slide one end under the retention tabs, then press in and down to secure it.

  7. Snap the filter holder back into the housing and replace the JetPak.

Pro tip: Keep a spare flat filter on hand so you can swap it in immediately and let the dirty one dry before cleaning.

Round

Cylindrical cartridges

  1. Hit the Standby Mode button on your controller to pause the pumps.

  2. Remove the filter cap and filter plate.

  3. Turn the filter core cap(s) counterclockwise and slide the cartridge(s) upward to remove.

  4. Using a garden hose with a nozzle, clean from the inside out. Work top to bottom on each pleat, then repeat from the outside.

  5. To remove body oils and lotions, soak the cartridge in warm water and filter cleaner.

  6. Reinstall by aligning the cartridge slot with the filter core fin, then replace the cap, filter plate, and filter cover.

How often should I clean and replace my filter?

Flat

Simplicity flat filters

Method Frequency
Rinse with garden hose Every 4 weeks, or sooner if needed
Full replacement Every 12–16 weeks (3–4 months)
Round

Cylindrical cartridges

Round filters need more regular attention but last significantly longer before full replacement. A weekly rinse takes a few minutes and makes a noticeable difference in water clarity.

Method Frequency
Rinse with garden hose Every 1–2 weeks
Deep clean (soak in filter cleaner) Once a month
Full replacement Every 1–2 years depending on use

How many hours a day should my spa filter run?

Most hot tubs are designed to filter the full volume of water at least twice per day. If you're using your spa heavily or seeing clarity issues even with clean filters and balanced chemistry, increasing daily filtration time is an easy first step to restoring the balance of your water.

4–8 hrs/day

Standard hot tubs

Typically split into two cycles.

12–16 hrs/day

Swim spas

Larger water volume needs more filtration.

Can I use filter cleaner products?

Yes, and for round filters especially, a dedicated filter cleaner or degreaser is more effective than water alone for removing body oils and sunscreen buildup. SpaGuard Filter Cleaner is a reliable option; soak the cartridge overnight for a thorough clean.

For flat Simplicity filters, a hose rinse is typically all you need. Chemical soaking is not recommended for that filter type.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when to replace vs. just clean my filter?

If rinsing no longer improves water flow or clarity, or the filter media looks worn, compressed, or discolored, it's time to replace. Flat filters: every 3–4 months. Round filters: every 1–2 years.

Can I run my hot tub without a filter?

Not recommended. Without a filter, there's nothing to remove contaminants from the water, and larger debris can be pulled into the pump, causing a blockage that may result in a service call.

Can I put my hot tub filter in the dishwasher?

This common home remedy isn't recommended. Dishwasher detergents can damage filter media and introduce soap residue into your spa water.

Where can I buy replacement filters for my Bullfrog Spa?

Cleartub carries replacement filters for all Bullfrog Spa models. Shop filters here.

Can dirty filters damage my spa?

Yes. Dirty filters can reduce water flow enough that the heating element overheats and shuts down the spa. Repeated overheating may cause heater failure and put unnecessary stress on the pumps.

What is a "FLO" code on a Bullfrog Spa?

"FLO" (or "Heater too hot") means there isn't enough water circulating through the spa. The most common cause is dirty filters. Cleaning them regularly helps prevent flow issues and prolongs the life of your pumps and heaters.
